A sketch and finished drawing of a Polkan White Cossack during the Russian Civil War of 1917-1923.
Yes, that is a cavalry lance with dynamite strapped to it.
Some extracts from the (fictional) book “Polkan, or the Siberian Centaurs” written by N. Volkov, second edition, New York, 1932:
“… it is speculated that the first centaur ever to reach the eastern shore of the Black Sea came with Jason’s mythical expedition to the far away country of Colchis. With life in Thessaly becoming ever more difficult due to the never ending turf wars with the Lapiths, it is understandable that a lot of centaurs choose to leave for the newly discovered lands, where, in the 7th century BC, they founded the city of Phasis (now Poti, in the Georgian Republic, Translator’s footnote).
…
Not much is known about them during the Middle Ages, with the exception of an Arab manuscript from 1259 which mentions the fact that Genghis Khan’s army also contained centaurs from the most important Polkan tribes. It is postulated that until that date the Polkan had suffered a second exodus towards the east, either because of fighting between the Bizantine Empire and the Persians, or later, in the 7th century, because of the Arab expansion.”
